Te Kohanga Reo - Poihakena

This is the official Facebook Page of Te Kohanga Reo - Poihakena (Sydney)

The translation of Te Kohanga Reo is The Language Nest and is an alternative education school for New Zealand Maori and other interested peoples. Traditionally the focus in Aotearoa was in early childhood education, whilst here in Australia we have diversified our programs to accommodate all age groups.

Te Kohanga Reo is a school that is interested in inter-cultural, inter-faith, and inter-organisational activities, and that has a heart for social justice. The Te Kohanga Reo curriculum and pedagogy provides a learning space to the akonga (student) to experience and to be immersed in the being of Maori. This learning space has the powerful potential to build identity, well being and belonging. It also aids the prevention of Maori disengaging; or even rejecting the existing educational systems offered today. Being connected to the educational system through Te Kohanga Reo creates a stronger sense of belonging between the akonga to their culture, language and arts but also to their extended Maori community.

The programs we offer are;

Early Childhood Education Program
Playgroup Education Program
After School Education Programs
Adult Education Programs
Senior Citizens Education Program

Our hikoi (journey) in Poihakena (Australia) begun in mid 2013 with our first classes commencing in September 2013. We acknowledge the many independent kohanga who have gone before us in laying the foundation for what we are today.

Te Kohanga Reo is focussed on building futures through education in the Maori language, culture and arts. In addressing this concern, it has set about creating Te Reo Maori (Maori Language) educational pathways in Australia for our Maori tamariki (children), rangatahi (youth), their whanau (families) and other interested peoples.

We are a New Zealand Maori educational organisation that are culturally & linguistically diverse; who are interested in inter-cultural, inter-faith and inter-organisational activities and who have a heart for social justice of all marginalised peoples.
